ASLIB Engineering and Technology Group

Introduction

The ASLIB Engineering & Technology Group was formed to cater for the needs of anyone with an interest in engineering and technology information. It attracts a wide range of information workers in all fields of interest and also professional practitioners who are interested in information. Its current members are drawn from a wide field which includes aerospace, computing, construction, energy, informatics, manufacturing, information systems and research.

The Group Aims:

  • to identify and establish contact with librarians and information professionals serving the engineering and technological communities
  • to facilitate their contact with each other, either through printed, personal or virtual means
  • to enable their professional growth and development
  • to enable the sharing of knowledge within these communities
  • to keep them informed of new products, services and developments within librarianship and information science
  • to promote best practice

Activities

Visits are arranged to a variety of organizations of relevance to engineering and often include an opportunity to see the library or information unit. Visits allow members to meet and network with other people in the profession and learn how information needs are met in a range of different environments.

ASLIB E&T group invite you to attend a presentation by Patrick Griffin who will be giving an overview of the Crossrail project. After this, there will an opportunity for you to view the current work from a viewing point in the Centrepoint Tower. There will also be time to see the exhibitions in the Visitor Centre.

The event is a good opportunity to see at first hand, the work of the practitioners and researchers who use our libraries.

The visit will take place on 26th April at 1pm. The event is free of charge.

If you would like to book a place at this event, please email Rob Thomas on rob.thomas@istructe.org

Location: 16-18 St Giles High Street, London WC2H 8LN.
The nearest underground station is Tottenham Court Road, we advise visitor's to take exit 4 for Centrepoint, then turn right and right again once out of the station onto St Giles High Street. The centre is the last unit in the row of shops.

Due to restrictions at the centre, they are unable to accommodate wheelchair users to the viewing area. Wheelchair users are welcome to attend and view the exhibition downstairs in the public area, where you will be able to hear the presentation taking place. Please let us know if you would like more information about this.

Information on Crossrail:

Crossrail is the largest addition to the south east rail network in 50 years. It is a multiple worksite programme with construction works running concurrently across the whole route with five tunnelling drives constructing 21 km of twin bore tunnels under the centre of the capital. Eight new underground stations will be built and connected to the existing Underground and rail networks together with four overground spurs including a connection to Heathrow Airport. Throughout construction Crossrail will seek to minimise disruption to the existing network, London and the south east as a whole.
